About Roman Numbers used in printmaking
FIRST LEARN the meaning of these letters:

The letters are arranged left to right in descending order of valuation and added to each other to form numbers eg: 15 is 10+5, written: XV Sometimes there is a lower value number in front of a higher one to indicate that the lower value must be subtracted from the adjacent higher value. Eg: IX (one taken from ten = 9) |
In printmaking, roman numerals are used especially when numbering Artist Proofs.
An Artist proof should not exceed 10% of the total number of the prints in one edition. If the edition is of 50 prints, there must be no more than 5 A.P. prints numbered as follows: I/V, II/V, III/V, IV/V, V/V
